Iquique - Challakrolo

100 km inland from the city of Iquique, in the heart of the Tamarugal desert, Challakrolo awaits you to offer all the comforts of its tourist center. With an ecological and self-sustainable proposal, it is entirely powered by solar energy, and hot water comes from its solar water heaters. Water is extracted from the subsoil of the Tamarugal desert itself. Its accommodations are remarkable, reflecting an architectural pattern rescued from the dwellings of the ancient desert inhabitants of the area. They are called “putukus”: they are made of salt, are circular, and have very thick walls that naturally moderate the desert climate inside, which is cold at night and warm during the day.
